Healing from the past, reclaiming your future
Traumatic events can have a tremendous effect on our mental health and impact our ability to cope with everyday life. Fortunately, it is possible to escape the hold trauma often has on us.
"We are powerful because we have survived, and that is what it is all about—survival and growth"
- Audre Lorde
What is trauma
Trauma is an emotional response to a distressing event that is difficult to cope with or out of our control. It can have lasting, adverse effects on a person's well-being. Traumatic events can be difficult to define because the same event may be more traumatic for some people than for others. Some examples of traumatic events are:
-
Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
-
Neglect or abandonment
-
Accidents or injuries
-
Natural disasters
-
Community violence
-
Near-death experiences
-
Traumatic grief/loss
-
Medical trauma
-
Chronic illness
-
Racial trauma
-
Military combat
